Scale
The same money, in the unit that makes sense
Subscriptions are priced monthly because a month is a small number. The decision you are actually making is annual.
Nobody signs a year-long commitment for a streaming service, and yet that is what most of them turn into. The monthly framing is not dishonest — it is simply the frame in which an amount looks negligible and a comparison is hard to make.
Put the same figure next to things you do decide about yearly, and it stops being background. That is the entire function of the annual line: not to shame anyone into cancelling, but to move the number into a unit where a decision is possible.
37%
of people surveyed in the EU had kept paying for a digital subscription they had stopped using and forgotten to cancel
18% said it happened often, 19% sometimes.

The survey behind that figure is European, and the share will differ where you live. The mechanism does not: a charge small enough to ignore each month is large enough to matter across a year.
